The Mari Lwyd
£9.00
The Mari Lwyd is a traditional Welsh midwinter custom featuring a ghostly figure made from a horse’s skull mounted on a pole and draped in a white sheet, often adorned with ribbons and decorations.
Accompanied by a group of revellers, the Mari Lwyd travels from house to house engaging in a ritual called pwnco, a playful battle of rhymed verses or songs with the householders, who must respond in kind before granting entry.
Once admitted, the group enjoys food, drink, and merriment, and the visit is believed to bring good luck for the coming year.
Though its origins are debated, possibly linked to Christian or pre-Christian symbolism, the Mari Lwyd remains a striking blend of eerie spectacle and festive cheer, celebrated as a unique part of Welsh cultural heritage.
