Poster explaining the cruel practice of The Welsh Not
The Welsh Not
£9.00
The Welsh Not was a form of punishment used in some schools
in Wales during the 19th and early 20th centuries, to discourage children from speaking their native language.
It typically involved a wooden token, often inscribed with “WN”, that was placed around the neck of any child caught speaking Welsh.
This token was then passed on to the next child caught speaking Welsh. The child wearing it at the end of the day might face punishment, including corporal punishment in some instances.
